Though it may not feel like it, summer is on the way, I promise. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been dreaming of summer for months. Well, thankfully, spring is upon us and planning for summer is not only appropriate, but I highly encourage it. If your summer schedule is looking a little sparse, we’ve got the perfect way to fill those days: volunteering in your city! Truly, nothing feels better than giving back, though selecting a place to volunteer can be challenging. Don’t you worry, we’ve done the dirty work for you. Here is a list of some incredible places to volunteer this summer (or anytime for that matter) in Ottawa.
Ottawa Food Bank
As many of you may know, the Ottawa Food Bank does incredible work in the community to help combat hunger in the city and so much more. They strive to do so by educating people on eating nutritious food on a budget, working with local farmers to deliver the freshest food possible, and working with partners to ensure every dollar donated is turned into $5 worth of food. To put into perspective to immensely important work they do, the Ottawa food bank distributes 14 tons of food each day. Wow! If you’d like to volunteer for an upcoming event or on an ongoing basis, click here to find out how.
As everyone knows by now, Canada is celebrating a pretty huge birthday this year! Yep, Canada is turning the big 1-5-0. Naturally, as Canada’s capital, you can imagine the city of Ottawa has been holding some memorable events that everyone can take part in. If you are 16 or older you’re in luck, because you can volunteer and get involved in Canada’s biggest celebration yet! There will be activities going on in every corner of the city throughout the year, and we think you’re going to want to be a part of them. The opportunities are endless, and all of them sound incredible, check it out.
Family Services Ottawa
Here we have one of Ottawa’s oldest charities. FSO is an outstanding organization which offers counselling and support services to anyone in Ottawa in need. They offer a safe space to help individuals work through anything they need. Volunteering at FSO is a wonderful opportunity to give back to your community, have important and eye-opening experiences, and connect with your community. Their site is often being updated with volunteer opportunities, and one might be the perfect fit for you! If you’d like to see what opportunities they have available right now, click here.
The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa
This non-profit aims to protect children and youth from abuse and neglect. I can’t stress enough how rewarding it is to work with children and youth, particularly those in need. If you have some spare time this summer, this could be an experience you will remember forever. Children benefit so very much from positive adult influences, and this could be you! The Canadian Museum of Nature
Not only is this an awesome volunteer opportunity, but also an opportunity to hang out at this museum which is bursting with cool things and activities. The Canadian Museum of Nature welcomes volunteers in a number of areas. You could work on the school programs, educational programs, youth opportunities, research and collections, and so much more. You’ll have the chance to attend special events, visit the museum whenever you want for free, and do some amazing work that you’ll be glad to have experienced. This is a pretty wonderful opportunity, people! Click here for more info.
